Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 is the first non-Korean ballast water treatment solution with South Korean type approval
The administration of the Republic of Korea has issued its first type approval certificate for a ballast water treatment solution from non-domestic supplier. Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 was type approved on 20 October 2021, allowing one of the global market’s most successful and respected solutions to be installed on vessels with the South Korean flag.
“Alfa Laval has a strong presence in Asia, and for many years we have delivered PureBallast 3 systems for installation at Korean shipyards,” says Tobias Döscher, Head of Global Sales, Business Development & Marketing for Alfa Laval PureBallast. “With this type approval in hand, we can support not only Korean yards, but also shipowners who sail under the South Korean flag. Korean vessels that trade internationally can benefit from having a strong partner with truly global service and support.”
Obtaining type approval in the Republic of Korea is part of Alfa Laval’s larger commitment to meeting Asian customers’ needs, especially as the ballast water treatment market shifts towards newbuilding in the coming years. Other efforts include the establishment of PureBallast 3 production in Qingdao, China, which has been scaling up since early 2021.
“There are signals from shipowners who are considering flagging more of their vessels in the Republic of Korea,” says KumHyun Na, Korean Sales Director at Alfa Laval. “The new type approval for PureBallast 3 can support such a move, as it provides access to proven UV technology. Alfa Laval has dedicated newbuild, retrofit and technical support teams in Korea already, so we look forward to extending our relationships with customers and seeing PureBallast 3 systems sail under the South Korean flag.”
